"It's never been about the money": A Personal Letter to Ladainian Tomlinson

In a radio interview Monday, Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson made three things perfectly clear (everything else was up for interpretation):
  • One, he wasn’t happy playing for the Chargers last season.
  • Two, he wants to return to San Diego, the place he has called home since being drafted in 2002.
  • Three, if he does return to the Chargers, it won’t come at a reduced rate.

“It’s never been about the money,” Tomlinson said on 1090-AM in San Diego. “I love the game of football. It’s all about being happy. Being happy and enjoying playing. That’s the most important part to me. Also being happy and chasing that Super Bowl.”

Really, LT? It's not about the money? Then take a god damn pay cut, earn the money you deserve for the low level you are playing at your age, and stay with the team you want to be on! You want to be happy and chase the Super Bowl? Then why not remain on an elite team that has a great shot at making a run again next year before you retire?! Are you saying you would rather play as a Kansas City Chief your last few seasons? Sure, you'll be making more money but you will most likely never even smell the post season. You are not the great player you once were, my friend, and you must realize that before making any more decisions that may destroy your professional life. Think about your pregnant wife, LT.

  1. That motherfucker. After all the Chargers have done for him. They could've bailed on him 2 years ago and had one of the best running backs in the league right now. But they were loyal. Fuck this guy.

  3. ^the chargers gave LT a fucking beating the way they ran him every game those past few seasons. but he was pure class about it. he brought the chargers out of stan humphries shame. i dont blame him for wanting a bit of respect. he does need to be real tho. chargers prob wont give up the same salary regardless. but no charger fan should ever curse LT period.

  4. You're right, Curan. I DO respect LT, but I'm just trying to understand why he wants out if he claims it's not about the money.

  5. He is a football player, no? Taking a beating is part of the job description, right? And isn't it also true that, if a running back is good, you would give him the ball a lot? Isn't that why their careers are traditionally a lot shorter than those of players at other positions (thus all the "washed up at 30" talk that proved to be right, in LT's case, this season)?

I certainly did respect LT, and will continue to be grateful, but he should just pull a Barry Sanders and get out before things get bad at this point. And stop talking shit about the Chargers. Or not, cus they're fucking done anyways.
