NIRVANA MONDAY
Yeah, okay, according to Earth calendars it is Wednesday. But in another plane of existence it could very well be Monday. That is how the multiverse works. So now you know.
If you're having trouble conceptually placing yourself in this alternate reality, I guarantee that this will make you feel right at home, and probably solve all of the mysteries of the universe for you:
Do you believe me now?

NIRVANA MONDAY
The late Jay Reatard covering "Frances Farmer WIll Have Her Revenge On Seattle."
(via jayreatard.com)
Also, in a move that somehow slipped by me/the world, Courtney Love deleted her twitter account. So in case you didn't know, that is the source of the deep existential Void you have been feeling opening up around you these past few months.
RIPs all around.

Nirvana Monday
"It was like our record could have been a hobo pissing in the forest for the amount of impact it had. It felt like we were playing ukeleles all of a sudden because of the disparity of the impact of what they did."
- Guy Picciotto of Fugazi, talking about Nirvana

I suppose I'm a bit late on this one...
How to Be Kurt Cobain for Halloween
Halloween gives both kids and adults the chance to dress up as anything they want and have a fun time. Many people choose to dress up as celebrities or rock stars. A Kurt Cobain costume is one of the easiest Halloween costumes to come up with, and takes very little work to put together.
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
Step 1:
Begin by searching for and choosing the right wig (unless your hair is the right length). For most of his time in the spotlight, Kurt had shoulder-length dirty blond hair. He colored his hair a shade of red for a time, as well. He also had slightly shorter hair for a period of time. Consult pictures of Kurt (see Resources below) to find the exact hair style you want.
Step 2:
Find a pair of jeans with holes in them. You could always just cut holes in a pair of jeans tat you already own. It's important to note that the jeans shouldn't be designer, though, as that wasn't Kurt's style at all.
Step 3:
Buy either a green “grandpa” sweater or a long-sleeve striped (horizontal) shirt. Kurt was known for wearing these, especially during the famous MTV Unplugged performance. Consult pictures from that event to find the exact color and then go to a local thrift store to pick one of these up.
Step 4:
Wear a pair of low-top tennis or skater shoes. If you can find or you own a pair that is beat up, that would be even better.
Step 5:
Stencil a goatee on your face. Kurt Cobain didn't always have facial hair while in Nirvana so this isn't something that you have to do.
Step 6:
Grab an acoustic guitar and play some of the songs from the MTV Unplugged performance throughout the evening. Luckily, these songs are relatively easy to play on guitar. If nothing else, learn how to play “About a Girl,” one of the easiest Nirvana songs to play.

It's that time again...
It's almost time to register for next semester's courses. I think to myself, "Self, what do I want to take next semester?"
I came across something very interesting in my list of classes:
"Topics: NIRVANA
H85.1130 History & Criticism 2 Credits
Instructor(s): Staff
Nirvana's Nevermind is often listed alongside The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band as one of the most important albums in rock history. Spearheaded by the late Kurt Cobain, Nirvana also helped shape the development of alternative independent rock in the 1990s. This unique course will consider the music and culture that shaped the rise of Nirvana, and the music and culture that Nirvana gave rise to. We'll examine the development of semi-popular music in the 1970s and its relationship to popular music; the development of the self-sufficient independent rock underground of the 1980s and its rejection of popular music; and Nirvana’s explosion into the mainstream in 1991 and popular music’s embrace of the rock underground. As we read texts like Michael Azzerad's Come as You Are and watch documentaries and music videos, we’ll investigate broader issues of subculture and bohemia, and their relationship to each other as well as to the pop mainstream. Students will consider why punk values triumphed in America in 1991, why Nirvana were the band that made it happen, and how the repercussions still shape the ambitions of bands and their audiences today."
Hmmmm...now the only question is would a true cake eater take this class, or would a true cake eater teach this class?

wait really?
he's dead??!??
"Cobain, the reluctant star of Seattle's grunge scene, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 27. His body was discovered on April 8, 1994 in a small room located over the garage of his Seattle home."
why would we celebrate a dead guy?

Nirvana Monday Has Come Again
In honor of this weekly holiday, I present to the blogosphere some quotes from the Monday Man himself, followed by a short educational video. Enjoy, you guys!
"Punk is musical freedom. It's saying, doing and playing what you want. In Webster's terms, 'nirvana' means freedom from pain, suffering and the external world, and that's pretty close to my definition of Punk Rock."
"The duty of youth is to challenge corruption."
"(I'd) Rather be dead than cool."
"It's okay to eat fish because they don't have any feelings."

WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO NIRVANA MONDAY!?!?!?!?!
I understand it was Labor Day and all but still! Do you think Kurt Cobain stopped rawking on Labor Day? Do you think In Utero and Nevermind just wrote themselves? The answer is no. It takes a genius to write these masterpieces. Not the kind of asshole who stops his work to celebrate Labor Day.
Shame on you.
Nirvana Monday better come back with a vengeance next week...
